Camping at Gargantua Bay

Okay a few people asked about Gargantua Bay so here it goes. Located along Superior’s coast Gargantua Bay is an area that has paddle/hike to back country sites. You can acquire your permits from the Agawa Bay campground gate. The a short drive down the main highway and you’ll reach Gargantua road. The access road is typical, not very wide, muddy and full of car breaking potholes it’ll take you a half hour or so to traverse down to the parking lots. From the parking lot you have three choices. Day three Kawartha Highlands spring 2016

Everyone know what a whip-poor-will is? Google them they are pretty cool looking birds. But they are also a bird which likes to call in the evening, all through the night, non stop , over and over and over, WHIP-POOR-WILL! WHIP-POOR-WILL! WHIP-POOR-WILL! Doesn’t make for the best sleep, I really need to invest in a good pair of ear plugs. Okay back to the trip. We awoke to a layer of frost on the ground. The temp had really dropped the night before and a white glisten covered everything in the… Read More

Day two Kawartha Highlands Spring 2016

With a great nights sleep on our side and bellies full of eggs, oatmeal and bacon we packed up the kids and headed towards the first portage of the day. There was a lot more portaging on day two than any of the other days. Keeping the kids motivated and fueled up with snacks was a high priority. A quick paddle through Triangle and Cherry and a short portage into Turtle we were making good time. The kids were counting down the portages as they passed and were very excited each time… Read More

Where’s the off switch.

Okay so we are playing super catch up when it comes to blog posts. My computer has been out of commission for almost two weeks now. Technology *shakes fist* it’s much simpler to just be out and about with a canoe and paddle. Today’s blog is from the taller half of Paddle In and as it was explained to me is more of a personal confession. So without further ado, here’s Andy. ” Where’s the off switch? If you are anything like me, you are probably reading this blog on your phone,… Read More

The Massasauga Provincial Park- A Photo Blog

Okay we’ve been super busy and I’ve been slacking on the blog front. This will all change as I’ve just finished writing up 15, that’s right count them, 15 different blogs. To get everything started I’d like to post a small photo blog on our recent trip into The Massasauga Provincial Park. The Massasauga is a small back country, canoe in only park, located outside of Parry Sound. With a system of inland lakes and campsites as well as sites available along the Georgian Bay shore. There are some great sites available and… Read More

Midori Solo Tent – Eureka Tents.

This year it was time to upgrade my solo tent. Shopped around for a bit and then kinda put it on the back burner. A few months back I found myself browsing tents again at the Outdoor Adventure Show. A particular tent caught my eye and within a few days it was ordered shipped and sitting nicely on my camping shelf.   Now at this point we were still deep in winter, no melt in sight. So there it sat on the shelf taunting me for weeks. The snow and ice… Read More

Grand River Parks Membership

Just a quick blog for those in The Grand River area or those who visit it frequently. The GRCA has revamped the membership this year. Instead of the car sticker it comes in the form of a card. We feel as this is an excellent change for a few reasons. 1)Those folks with multiple vehicles aren’t stuck having to use the car with the sticker on it 2)The ability to hop in another persons car with your card and still get into the park. We will definitely be using a lot more… Read More

CANOE! The story of a long drive and two very sore arms.

When you were a kid and there was road trip or long Sunday drive how did you pass the time?  Car games right? Who can spot the different license plate, the numbers game, name that animal. Of course you did. We did with our siblings. Well 4 years ago my wife and I on a long drive to Algonquin came up with a great car game that especially heats up during the summer. Before I get to the rules can I cannot stress enough that you shouldn’t be distracting your driver. Leave… Read More

Oh the things you can miss with a canoe on your head.

Oh the things you can miss with a canoe on your head. Sounds like a Dr Suess book doesn’t it. When we portage we often take for granted our surroundings as we trudge ahead eyes peeled for open water. Some of us grunt and groan, others are forever lost in silent contemplation of why they are undertaking this portage in the first place. Some even race ahead looking to prove their prowess and vigor as they blast through the portage loaded down with canoe and pack. But guys what could we be… Read More

A Trip down the Eramosa River. Getting the whole family out.

With temperatures creeping in the high teens this weekend and water temperature rising steadily on the Eramosa river, we decided it was time to get the family out on the river for a nice spring paddle. I don’t think there is a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than being out on the river for a paddle. Since we’d have our our three year old with us we decided on a shorter route and launched at the bridge on Stone road east right beside the scout camp. You can launch all… Read More
