Snakes,lizards and turtles oh my!
To say we saw a few reptiles this trip would be an understatement. From the first portage on our scaley friends were with us. Perched atop beaver dams, slithering through the fields and even seeking refuge under my boots.
The true treat of the trip was a close encounter with Ontario’s only lizard species, the five lined skink. Throughout its range the skink is considered endangered or under special concern. So getting to see one of these amazing little guys is really special. This particular skink was hiding under a small rock I overturned on one of our hikes. Cameras immediately were out as I tried to corral him. He allowed a short photo shoot before scurrying under my boot and then down a rock face.
An animal like the five lined skink is reason enough to slow down and take in all the little things on a trip. He was no longer than 6-10 cm and we could of easily passed him by. So I know we’ve said this before but remember when you’re out that it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey.
This week we’ll be highlighting a series of photos from our good friend D.J at http://djmcphailphotography.com/ . D.J is great to have on a trip his passion for the backcountry and wildlife photography is evident in everything he does. Chelsea says sorry again for the go-pro but that’s another story entirely. So make sure to head over to his site and take look.
